Designer Interview
Tell me a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? What is your background?
Born and brought up in Mumbai, India, I am a product of a fast-metropolitan city. Mumbai buzzes with larger than life dreams of the youth of a vibrant country! After completing my studies in India, I moved to New York, where I realized both NYC and Mumbai were ultimate cosmopolitan cities known for splendid art and cultural dynamism.
When did you know you wanted to become a designer?
Having studied in Mumbai and New York as a student of contemporary arts, I dabbled in several ventures over the past couple of decades in many different mediums: such as fused glass, pottery, leather and embellished handbags. I finally decided to launch my own brand “Maneesha Ruia” in 2013 focusing on a collection of accessories, comprising of scarves, wraps and travel wear.
"As I partner with women on their ever-evolving journey, “Maneesha Ruia” strives to wrap wander lusters with casual elegance."
What inspired you to design scarves? Where does your inspiration come from?
I have always liked the idea that one can transform their look by accessorizing with a single item, like a shawl, wrap or bag. I love exploring and get my inspiration from people, cultures and nature.
How does the Indian culture play a role in your designers/ brand?
The collections have a unique aesthetic that are chic, and at the same time supporting Indian traditions and craftsmanship. Most of the collections are artisanal and are embellished with a combination of interesting materials such as beads, lace, Swarovski, leather and embroidery.
How do you want women to feel when they wear your scarves?
As I partner with women on their ever-evolving journey, “Maneesha Ruia” strives to wrap wander lusters with casual elegance.
"My collections are inspired for people on the move, and I hope that one day every person has a “Maneesha Ruia” piece in their luggage!"
How do you define fashion? What is your personal style?
Easy elegance has always been an attractive feature for me.
What is your hope for the future of the Maneesha Ruia brand?
My collections are inspired for people on the move, and I would hope that one day every person has a “Maneesha Ruia” piece in their luggage!
What is your favorite fashion trend?
I love this quote by Coco Chanel - “Fashion fades. Only style remains the same."
Are you passionate about something other than fashion or design?
Culinary Arts! My next passion is to have a Cordon Bleu title to my name.
