Designer Interview
Michele Long of Beautiful Soul
When did you know you wanted to start your own brand?
I always knew my designs were unique in the market. Once I mastered the ability to transform ideas into wearable art, I embarked on the exciting journey of bringing my vision to life.
What did the beginnings of Beautiful Soul look like?
In the early days, I developed my own style by making and wearing my own jewelry. I collected unique pieces from around the world and from nature, grouping them by texture and color before sketching out a design. I still use this approach today, as I’m a very visual person.
“My goal is for you to stand out, lead, and inspire."
What is your favorite piece in your latest collection?
That depends on the day! I only create pieces I love and would wear myself. My pearls, which are a blend of rustic and modern, are exceptional. I wear them most days and have an amazing collection offered in our line. They elevate any look. I design collections that are lovely when layered together, giving a unique, textural look.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in museums, interior design elements, and, of course, nature’s palette. Walking through museum exhibits helps solidify my ideas and refreshes my creativity. For example, natural history museums offer incredible textures and colors—it’s hard to find a better experience. Ancient Egyptian exhibits are always a favorite; they were exceptional artists.
How would you describe the style you aim for your brand?
I design with two main goals. First, to elevate a basic wardrobe capsule — like a simple T-shirt and jeans or by using a monochromatic palette, with natural white linen being my go-to. In this way, clients can create a unique style with a one-of-a-kind necklace. One day it could be a raw gemstone choker, and the next, an organic matte long necklace. Same outfit, and a completely different vibe.
Second, I design for the bold and confident. My goal is for you to stand out, lead, and inspire. I want you to look effortless, interesting, and set the trend, not follow it.
What sets your brand apart from the rest?
I’m constantly improving my skills, evolving, and keeping my designs current. Researching ancient elements & materials is important. I also love adding surprises to my designs. Keep an eye out for those! I also place selenite healing crystals in every design.
What brand values are most important for Beautiful Soul?
Our brand’s philosophy is ‘Kindness is cool.’ We’re a family business that started with an anti-bullying message. In the first week at a new elementary school, my daughter asked, ‘Why are the pretty girls so mean?’ I told her that true beauty comes from within, and that being mean or cruel is never attractive. That’s how the name Beautiful Soul was born.
What was your previous work experience before launching?
I worked in TV production & interior design firms. I also worked in specialty boutiques as a young Mother.
“We’re not just crafting jewelry—we’re cultivating a community, spreading kindness, and designing pieces that make people feel as beautiful as they truly are.”
What was the toughest circumstance you overcame when just starting your business?
My personal growth has come from shifting my focus away from the negative. While it can be challenging at times, having a strong family support system helps me stay focused on positive, new ideas and overcome obstacles along the way.
If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career, what would it be?
Trust your instincts.
Do you have a passion other than fashion or design?
So many, how much time do we have? Ha ha, we live by the beach. So much of that space defines me.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting their own brand?
Do your own thing! Be true to yourself.
What is the most important thing for which you would like your brand to be recognized?
I hand-make everything in the Beautiful Soul jewelry line. My goal is to “Make you shine”!
What should consumers expect to see next from Beautiful Soul?
I’ve been working on expanding our Men’s line. We get a great deal of positive feedback from the Men. I am working to continue to develop my Men’s line.
What do you envision for the future of your brand?
The future of Beautiful Soul Jewelry looks… well… beautiful!
We are incredibly fortunate to have cultivated such a wonderful community of clients who not only appreciate our designs but deeply connect with our positive message: “Kindness is Cool.” Watching this “Family” grow and evolve alongside us is one of our greatest joys.
Our global clientele, who have been faithfully collecting our pieces for years, inspire us every day to keep creating. It’s thrilling to see how far we’ve come, but even more exciting is the journey ahead as our designs continue to resonate with hearts all over the world.
Each day brings fresh bursts of creativity, fueling new ideas and collections that surprise even me! This endless flow of inspiration serves as a reminder that my best work always emerges when I stay true to myself and to the essence of Beautiful Soul Jewelry.
We’re not just crafting jewelry—we’re cultivating a community, spreading kindness, and designing pieces that make people feel as beautiful as they truly are. Here’s to an ever-expanding, ever-glowing future!
