When did you know you wanted to become a designer?

I’ve always had a creative side and love shopping, but I decided to design suits once I became a surf coach and couldn’t find performance suits for my body.

What is your earliest design memory for your brand?

A reversible bikini about 5 years ago. I tested it on a big South swell, and it held up…I was so happy!

Where do you find inspiration?

In the water and living in the tropics every day. I live in a touristy surf town and am inspired by designs from all over every day.

What is your favorite part about designing?

The mistakes that end up being major wins.

“Inclusiveness, body positivity, small batches, locally sources, designs that empower EVERY body are most important to us.”

What made you want to design size inclusive swimwear?

I couldn’t find any for myself and had so many surf students with the same issue.

How would you describe your personal style?

Eclectic and colorful.

What was your previous work experience before launching your brand?

I’m an award-winning indie filmmaker, surf coach - 2X National Champ and have represented Mexico at the Pan-American Olympic qualifier, film curator for Festival Sayulita.

What sets your brand apart from the rest?

One-of-a-kind pieces with styles for all body types up to size 5X. The various Mexican sunsets printed on upcycled material is what sets them apart from the rest, as well as the fact that it’s performance swimwear for bodies over a size 10.

What are the most important brand values to Belle Curves?

Inclusiveness, body positivity, small batches, locally sources, designs that empower EVERY body are most important to us.

What do you envision for the future of your brand?

The dream would be to just be able to focus on the design and testing part with the support of a full team, whether that be another company overseeing or something like that. I have so many other projects that I’d like to work on this lifetime, and it truly takes great teams to succeed.

Do you have a favorite piece that you have designed?

A full piece I’m working on now and of course the bikini with couture back tie.

What were some hurdles you had to overcome in your business?

Having the courage to put it out there. This is very personal to me since I am a curvy woman with a fluctuating body. I started making these suits for myself and my personal body issues had me all up in my head in the beginning.

“Keep your focus and believe, just remember it may take longer than you’d planned for.”

What are the challenges in designing size inclusive swimwear?

You must have many styles to accommodate all bodies.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your career, what would it be?

Things take time. Be patient and don’t rush the job.

How has the fashion industry changed since you first started out?

Major brands are starting to recognize inclusivity.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to a new designer?

Keep your focus and believe, just remember it may take longer than you’d planned for.

What can consumers expect to see next from your brand?

Forward movement full of new colors, styles and real models.
