Designer Interview
When did you know you wanted to become a designer?
I always loved fashion and after working in the judicial court system and owning a fabric care business, I decided to go back to school in 2014 to pursue fashion.
What is your earliest design memory for your brand?
In 2014, I made my first collection along with a photoshoot.
"I consider myself a visionary, however, some of my inspirations are driven by organic natural external elements.”
Where do you find inspiration?
I consider myself a visionary, however, some of my inspirations are driven by organic natural external elements.
What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when just starting out?
The biggest mistake would be not doing more research on what I needed to have done. I would have saved a lot of money and heartache.
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is timeless, comfortable, well designed and crafted.
What is your favorite fashion film or show?
Project Runway is my favorite. I love to watch competitions of any sort.
If you could visit one place in the entire world, where would it be and why?
Costa Rica is on my list to visit. I want to tour the tropical island and socialize with the natives and learn about their culture. I am so open to new ideas and adventures.
What was your previous work experience before launching your brand?
I worked 20 years as a court mediator in the judicial system. Then in 2006 I became an entrepreneur and started an organic dry-cleaning business with pickup and delivery service.
What sets your brand apart from the rest?
My design ideas are based on my visions that are organic and original. I search for the best fabric and line it with a luxurious lining that will keep the body warm in the cold season and cool in the warmer season. My designs are limited and anyone wearing it will feel comfortable and look stunning.
What do you envision for the future of your brand?
The future for my brand is to expand into boy’s and men’s wear as well as leather accessories.
Do you have a favorite piece that you have designed?
I have two coats that are my favorite. During the winter season, I wear my ¾ length faux fur collar coat and the short waistcoat orange lambskin collar jacket. With a simple shirt, or a thin sweater, I am comfortable each time I wear the coats.
“Every designer has their own dreams and there is no rule book to show you exactly how to get there.”
What were some hurdles you had to overcome in your business?
In this industry, it is a solo act, and you must feel your way through to figure out how to build your brand. Every designer has their own dreams and there is no rule book to show you exactly how to get there. The first hurdle is to know that you are on your own.
What is the one piece of advice you would give to a new designer?
Hire an attorney who knows fashion to get your business registered. Do your research thoroughly before shelling out any money to consultants or marketing agents.
How did your brand navigate and overcome the pandemic in 2020?
This is a tough time for everyone regardless of the business that they are in. I decided to take the time and focus on brand recognition and make some changes that will benefit my brand. I am preparing for when the shift happens, and the economy turns around.
What are your greatest strengths/weaknesses?
My strengths are designing, time management and pushing the ball uphill when things appear difficult as hell. If no is the answer, I will continue until there is a yes. When it comes to weaknesses, I prefer to say there are areas in my business that require more assistance. I have realized it is impossible to do everything that a business requires.
