Designer Interview
When did you know you wanted to become a designer?
I think this is a creative characteristic that I had when I was a child. When I enjoy the world of painting, I get a sense of spiritual fulfillment in the process of creation. It was only when I grew up that I took my creative direction to the field of fashion.
What is your earliest design memory for your brand?
As an outdoor sports enthusiast, living in a subtropical country, I place more emphasis on the functionality as well as the aesthetics of my clothing.
When it was hard to find brands in the market that had both, but also expressed quiet strength and beauty attire, that's when I decided to start my own brand.
“EMORA crafts timeless clothing pieces that embody classic elegance. Our designs transcend borders, embrace inclusivity, and resonate with individuals across generations.”
What did the beginnings of EMORA look like?
In the beginning, we did not have a physical storefront. I still had a regular job and had to work for EMORA on my weekends and evenings. Luckily, I had friends who helped me in areas I wasn't good at, such as photography and setting up the website. After growing each year, we opened our first retail store and continue to expand in other markets.
What inspired you to name your brand?
We know that no piece of clothing can magically transform you into a more special person and we believe that you are truly unique and special.
Emora inspires you to embrace your imperfections, your uniqueness, your curves, and your personal journey.
EMORA, Embrace Your Aura.
What is your favorite part about designing?
Every creation seeks kindred spirits who resonate with us - in our community, aesthetics, love for uniqueness, and values.
As you read this, know it's a moment of resonance. My favorite part is when I find people who share the same values, turning supporters into friends.
Our bond grows through mutual understanding and empathy.
Where do you find inspiration?
Nature, our guide.
Nature is our main inspiration and the foundation of our contemporary urban designs. It reflects our true selves and it’s a source of inspiration. We transform these experiences into creative energy, offering clothing that promotes harmony between people and nature.
How would you describe the style of your brand?
EMORA crafts timeless clothing pieces that embody classic elegance. Our designs transcend borders, embrace inclusivity, and resonate with individuals across generations.
What brand values are most important for EMORA?
Simplicity on our terms.
Emora stands for a thoughtful and intentional approach to minimalism. We believe it is important to identify and recognize our needs and passions. Our focus lies in carefully selecting and cherishing the objects that become part of our lives while letting go of the unnecessary.
What was the toughest circumstance you overcame when just starting out your business?
The more principles you adhere to, the more obstacles you encounter.
Mindful choices (sustainable fabric use and ethical production), practical aesthetics (functional fabrics use), elevated classic (fine stitching for product longevity), ease of wear, and adaptability, are our must-haves.
Therefore, from fabric development to exquisite garment production and sales, it is a more difficult process than usual for fashion brands.
But happily, despite the difficulties we have been facing, we are still growing year after year.
How important is sustainability to your brand? What sustainable measures has EMORA taken to better the environment?
We make conscious decisions to minimize our impact on the environment, producing only a small number of items of each design with utmost care and attention. We have chosen to work with manufacturers certified by GOTS (The Global Organic Textile Standard), OEKO TEX, BLUESIGN, GRS (Global Recycled Standard), and moreover, we believe in a business that reflects a willingness to do things differently, to write our own rules, to treat everyone with integrity and respect.
What is one piece of advice you would give to a new designer?
Believe in yourself. We may question ourselves for different reasons during the creative process but believing in ourselves is definitely more important than anyone's support. If you don't believe in yourself, how can you express the ideas and aesthetics you want to convey through your work?
What sets your brand apart from the rest?
Practical aesthetics.
Due to our base in Taiwan, where residents experience hot climates, typhoons, and rainy seasons year-round, EMORA incorporates functional fabrics into our designs to ensure optimal comfort and adaptability amid these transitions.
“EMORA is not just a fashion brand; it's a connection. Women from different countries and diverse cultural backgrounds are intricately linked through a shared philosophy, supporting each other and growing together.”
What has been your biggest accomplishment to date?
I wouldn't say it’s participating in fashion weeks or international fashion awards. For me, touching people's hearts through my work is the main source of achievement, and it will always be.
What do you envision for the future of your brand?
In the era of social media, besides letting more people around the world know about EMORA, we also want to collaborate with creators from different art fields to create interesting concepts.
What should customers expect to see next from EMORA?
More elevated classic works.
Our three must-meet criteria are product longevity, ease of wear, and adaptability. The collection features exquisitely understated pieces that are meticulously crafted to cover all three aspects. In contemporary urban settings, EMORA's quiet strength and beauty shine through in a wide range of settings.
What is the most important thing you would like your brand to be recognized for?
EMORA is not just a fashion brand; it's a connection. Women from different countries and diverse cultural backgrounds are intricately linked through a shared philosophy, supporting each other and growing together.
